So if you are still wondering whether to start an online business or even a side hustle selling digital products…do it now!
Best Platform To Sell Digital Products?
There are many platforms you can use to sell digital products like Shopify, Etsy, BigCommerce, Groove Sell, Creative Fabrica, etc
But I personally prefer Shopify…
I have used them in the past & I’m pretty happy with the outcome…
I know when we mention Shopify most people think it is a platform for dropshipping or e-commerce, which it is of course.
But it is so much more.
If you ever wondered if can we sell digital products on shopify? then hell yes!
And in this article, I will walk you through the step-by-step process of creating an online store using shopify to sell digital products.
How To Sell Digital Products on Shopify
In this article we will go through the entire process involved in setting up a shopify store..so do read carefully.
Step 1 – Research & Planning
Pick A Niche
To set up your shopify store you first need to pick a niche. decide on the specific topic that you wanna work in based on your knowledge, skill & interest.
You don’t have to niche down completely if you are not sure…you can try certain things & see what works, what you like, what you love working on & most importantly what sells.
But just get a basic idea about a niche…something to get you started.
If you want help to find your niche, I recommend reading this ebook
This is pretty basic, almost like a workbook that will help you to pick a niche.
Market Research
Just picking a niche won’t help, you need to do market research.
See if there is actually a demand for your product or not…because if there is no one actually searching for your product. no matter how good it is…it is still useless.
So do proper research –
Here are some tips to do market research
Tip 1: search for it on Google.
See how many relevant results could be found, analyze the topic results…see what they are selling & what you can offer.
Tip 2: search social media
Spend time on social media, search for your topics, analyze the results, see things that are getting more shares, and likes, and even spend time going through comments & see if there are any suggestions that you can use to create your own product.
This is the best way to find the content gap & if your product can fill that content gap…it will sell without even selling.
Tip 3: Sell Before you create (this is relevant to high-ticket digital products like ebooks, software, templates, etc…if your is generic like posters, planners, etc…skip this)
This is a technique that almost all successful creators use & that is to sell before you create.
Just prepare some mockup, sneak peek or just publish a post or send out an email saying that you are about to create this product & see if people are interested
Tip 4: Ask
If you already have an audience whether it is your blog visitors, youtube subscribers, social media following, or email list…just ask them what type of digital product they will be interested in…not only will this help you to see the demand, get content ideas.
You might even end up getting customers even before you have your product.
Step 2
Setting Up Shopify Store
Shopify is absolutely easy to work with…you can easily set up your store without knowing coding or designing.
Choose a theme:
Shopify has a wide range of themes for you to pick from. Browse the Shopify theme store and select a visually appealing and user-friendly theme that suits your brand and product offerings.
Customize your store:
Personalize your store by adding your logo, and branding elements, and creating pages such as the home page, about page, and contact page.
You can use Canva to create a logo or if you have $5 to spare I highly recommend hiring someone from Fiverr to do this ( saves you time & also gives you a better professionally designed logo)
Set up payment gateways:
This is important, so focus. Configure payment gateways like Shopify Payments, PayPal, or other third-party providers to enable secure online transactions.
Set up shipping: Skip this process as we are selling digital products…but if you do intend to physical products this is when you have to set up shipping.
Step 3 Product Creation
Create Digital Products
– Here digital products can be anything – courses, ebooks, templates, software, apps, audio files, videos, printables, etc.
Now you can create these digital products using tools or you can hire someone to do it for you from Fiverr.
Here I’ll be listing some tools that will help you to create digital products…you don’t have to use them per se…but these are my most trusted ones.
Tools You Can Use
- If you want to sell printables & you want to create them yourselves…then use Canva
- If you want ai to create pintables here are some of the best chatgpt prompts to help you to create all types of printables
- You can use BookBolt to create & sell books
- Use Voxai to create & audiobooks.
- You can get 10,000+ ready-to-sell high-quality ebooks from here
- To create videos, animation, storyboards, voiceovers, 3d characters use this ai tool
- If you want to sell apps use this ai tool to create apps in seconds.
- want to sell music – then use this app it converts any text into a song.
These are some of the tools, if you want to know more, just let us know.
Hire Someone
Of course, if you don’t want to go through the headache of creating your own products you can just hire some freelancers from Fiverr.
There are some pretty amazing Fiverr sellers available for excellent affordable prices…you can check them out.
Just make sure your product is good, high-quality content, visually appealing & most importantly filled with value for your customers.
Formatting
this is really important, even if your product is great but it isn’t formatted well…it is pretty dam useless for your buyers & might end up getting bad reviews which means tanked sales…
So focus more on formatting your product right – there are many formats that you can sell digital products in, such as PDF, JPG, SVG, MP3, MP4, ZIP, etc).
Just make sure you format it right & also make sure to let your users know the best way to use your digital product.
You can do this by proving an additional resource file or just mentioning the instruction in the email…make sure your customers know how to use your product.
Step 4 – Product Upload & Store Set Up
Add Products:
Now the next step is to upload your products to the shopify store this could be done In your Shopify admin panel
go to the “Products” section and click “Add Product.” Provide product details, including title, description, and price, and upload corresponding digital files.
Set up product categories:
Organize your digital products into relevant categories to enhance navigation and improve the customer experience.
Remember the easier the navigation, the more chances of your ideal customers finding your products.
Create product images:
Design eye-catching product images or mockups to showcase your digital products visually. Use tools like Canva or hire a graphic designer if needed.
Or you can use this free mockup generator to create high-quality product images.
Optimize product descriptions:
Write persuasive, SEO-friendly product descriptions that highlight the benefits, features, and value of your digital products.
You can use ChatGPT to help you out here.
Step 5: Marketing and Promotion
Content marketing:
Create a blog or resource section on your Shopify store to share valuable content related to your niche. This attracts organic traffic and establishes you as an authority.
Social media marketing:
Most of your ideal customers hang out on social media So, it is crucial that you include social media in your marketing plan.
Create valuable content on social media, this will help you to build a presence/authority for your brand, engage with your target audience, and share updates about your digital products, this will keep your audience interested.
You can use syllaby.ai – an ai tool that will tell you exactly what people are searching for in your niche & it will also create high-quality engaging videos for you based on those topics.
You can pick the platform you want or you can build a brand on all popular platforms…it is up to you.
But if you want to conquer all platforms with minimum effort then I recommend using soci ai app…this automates the entire social media marketing for you.
It generates content ideas, generates content/graphics/videos, you can also create bulk content & schedule it.
Email marketing:
Email marketing is the best digital asset you can own. even now if you are not using email marketing to grow your business…you are just leaving money on the table.
Implement an email marketing strategy by collecting visitor email addresses through lead magnets or newsletter sign-ups. Send regular updates, product launches, and exclusive offers to your subscribers.
You can use Builderall for this.
If you want to know how to do email marketing, I highly recommend you read this book…this is the single most important guide you need to read to learn everything you need to know about how to do email marketing.

SEO optimization:
SEO Optimization means optimizing your store for search engines, when you make it easier for search engines to find & understand your site better, search engines will make it easier for your customers to find you.
And this can be done by optimizing your store and product pages for search engines by using relevant keywords, meta tags, and descriptive URLs.
This helps improve your visibility in search engine results.
Paid advertising:
Most people get scared of this idk why? this is possibly the easiest, most effective & FASTEST way to get sales…
IK it costs money but if you were doing any offline business…won’t you have invested in promoting your store? so why does this have to be different?
And honestly, if you do know how to do it right, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get leads.
That’s why if you are new to this I recommend hiring a professional.
If you have the budget I really recommend you include paid ads in your marketing strategy.
Consider running targeted ads on platforms like Google Ads or social media platforms to reach a wider audience and drive traffic to your store. You can get $125 Free Ad Credit here
Use Adcreative.ai to create ad creatives/images that are highly addictive…adcreative creates ads that sell – these ad creatives are created considering your target audience, trending trends & human psychology…
So they are most prone to convert.
Step 6: Customer Engagement and Support
This is an obvious step but you would be surprised how many people screw this.
Provide excellent customer support:
Be there for your customers, answer their every question, no matter how simple or obvious it might sound to you, and be there to answer them.
And always be available…I had a product that I bought for like 18K & the customer service was HORRIBLE…the worst experience ever.
Even today I hold a grudge against them, the product was useless, I didn’t get my money back & they were HORRIBLE.
I don’t want you to be the HORRIBLE experience of someone else. So,
Respond promptly to customer inquiries and provide helpful assistance. Use customer support tools like live chat or support ticket systems to streamline the process.
Encourage customer reviews:
Request satisfied customers to leave reviews on your store. Positive reviews build trust and influence potential buyers.
Trust me a product with good positive reviews is most likely to sell than the same type of product with no reviews even for a less price.
So do request your customers to live reviews.
PS:
have you seen many products on Amazon & Flipkart that give some cashback for a review+screenshot on their product?
Honestly, I’m not sure if it is right or wrong…but it definitely works.
Offer incentives:
Run promotions, discounts, or loyalty programs to reward repeat customers and attract new ones.
We did this for one of our clients…she had a book published. we ran a free promotion of 4 days & sold many copies.
We asked them to leave a review & after the promotion ended with 23 reviews the book sold like crazy even for the price that was on the higher end.
This tends to work great for new brands/stores…as people don’t know your brand or your product quality…these free giveaways help you to get customers for free & with their reviews you can sell more products than what you gave away for free.
Use Shopify apps:
Shopify offers several apps that can help you market and promote your digital products. For example, the ReConvert app allows you to create upsell and cross-sell offers, while the ReferralCandy app helps you create a referral program to incentivize customers to refer their friends
Step 7: Continuous Improvement and Growth
Yes! Passive income does sound great but this isn’t the time yet.
Just because you see some sales coming in…don’t just assume you’ll keep getting sales on auto-pilot because it ain’t happening.
You need to work your ass off if you want your store to reach 5-6 figures & I don’t mean tiring, hopeless work.
Nope! you need to be on your toes monitoring trends, and analytics.
Analytics
Monitor your store’s performance using Shopify’s analytics or third-party tools. Track metrics like traffic, conversion rate, and sales to identify areas for improvement.
A/B Testing
Experiment with different product placements, pricing strategies, or website designs to optimize conversions.
Keep testing, keep trying new things, and strategies & notice what works…And when you find something that works…don’t be afraid to use it as much as possible.
Test one element at a time to accurately measure the impact.
Stay updated:
As I said you are not done. Keep up with industry trends, emerging technologies, and customer preferences. Adapt your product offerings and marketing strategies accordingly to stay competitive.
Remember, building a successful online business takes time, dedication, and ongoing effort. Continuously learn, adapt, and refine your strategies based on customer feedback and market trends.
And if you feel stuck anywhere, or need any help…don’t be afraid to reach out.
I or my team will be more than happy to help you out
